Irrigation is what we use most on a home visit: a warm, controlled flush of water that softens and lifts the wax out. It needs no clinic, no chair and no equipment you have to travel to.

The water is warmed to body temperature and delivered at a controlled pressure — this is not the old syringe your parents will remember, which is where irrigation got its reputation. The practitioner works one ear at a time, checking as she goes, and stops the moment the ear is clear.

It suits a home visit for a simple reason: everything needed fits in a bag, and the only thing the room has to provide is somewhere comfortable to sit. Most appointments take under half an hour for both ears, and most people notice the difference before we have packed up.

Every visit is by the same practitioner — insured, DBS checked, and with 30 years in the NHS and Adult Social Care behind her.

What happens on the visit

Questions people ask

Does ear irrigation hurt?

It should not. The water is warmed to body temperature — cold water is what makes irrigation uncomfortable — and the pressure is controlled rather than forced. Most people describe it as a strange sensation rather than a painful one. If anything is uncomfortable, say so and we stop.

Do I need to use drops beforehand?

Softening the wax with olive oil drops for a few days first makes the appointment quicker and easier, so we do advise it where there is time. If the wax has come on suddenly, or you have not had the chance, we will still come out and see what we can do.

How long does it take?

Most appointments are done inside half an hour for both ears, including the checks before and after. Very stubborn wax can take longer — there is no extra charge for that.

What does it cost?

£30 for one ear, £50 for both, wherever you are in the area we cover. No call-out fee, and the same price on weekday evenings and at weekends.
